Experiencing God Beyond the Home Makeover
I recently read a book entitled Finding God Beyond Harvard which reminded of the way in which our experiences in life teach us much about God. The author of this book went to Harvard and learned much about how God works in our world and in the lives of those around us. She came to experience life in a new and exciting way as she let go of self and followed hard after Him in all areas of her life. She saw God working in the lives of those around her and also in her own life. She shared with others what God was doing in her life in a way that made them also want to know her God. Her whole life took on a new level of personal growth as she came to love God and love others like she never had before in her life.
I didn’t even want to do the home makeover this year. In my opinion, we didn’t have the available leadership, money, or time to complete a project of this size. God, however, had more in mind than we could ever imagine. He not only sent the family to us, but He also said, “ you will do this project through me. I will provide the leadership, the money, and the time. All you have to do is just follow me.”
The Women’s Ministry Leadership Team took over this God-sized project and let Him lead all the way. It was a wonderful experience to see God take a small effort on our part and change it into a huge blessing.
One thing we have learned in the study Experiencing God, by Henry Blackaby, is that our world is not seeing God because we are not attempting anything that only God can do. “Our world is not being attracted to the Christ we serve because they are not seeing Him at work in our lives. The see us doing good things for God and comment, “That’s nice, but it’s not my thing.” The world is passing us by because they do not want to get involved in what they see in our lives. We are not giving them opportunities to encounter God. They are seeing only us. Let the world watch God at work, and He will attract people to Himself. Let Christ be lifted up, not in words but in life. Let people see the difference the living Christ makes in a life, a family, or a church; that will affect how they respond to the gospel. When the world sees things happening through God’s people that cannot be explained except that God Himself has done them, the world will be drawn to such a God.” (Experiencing God, Week 7, Day 3)
